U13 DCA Walter S. Gee Shield Round 2 vs Hornsby
Manly Warringah 120 (A Chakravarty 23, T Laughton 22 off 11) defeated Hornsby Ku-ring-gai 86 (J. Lawson 4 for 10, A. McConnell 2 for 18, R. Dhillon 1 for 14 off 10 overs)
A cold and blustery day at Lake Park Narrabeen brought together two of the stronger competition teams for what was to be one of the most extraordinary cricketing come backs ever seen.
Manly lost the toss and were sent in to bat. Manly openers Jake Hutchings and Luke Burgess settled in well against some fierce opening bowling but runs were difficult to come by. Manly lost their first in the 12th over when Jake Hutchings was run out courtesy of a direct hit from 20 meters out. Luke soon followed an over later and then the wheels fell off. In the blink of an eye Manly were 5 for 29 and in dire need of some settled batting.
Roop Dhillon (17) and Arjun Chakravarty (23) displayed some wonderfull maturity in slowly rebuilding the Manly innings. In an effort to give a much needed boost to the run rate, Roop was run out in a mix up and again the rugged up Manly faithful were again thrust into the depths of despair. Pleasingly Harry wood kept up the momentum until he too was run out for 19. Toby Laughton (23) moved up the order with strict instructions to hit Manly out of this mess. His first over at the crease resulted in 3 fours and a six (which almost hit a second car windscreen for the week) to take Manly over the psychological 100 run hurdle. The Manly tail still had some wagging to do until Arjun was caught in the 48th over and Manly finished their innings with 120 runs. This was a fantastic result considering the perilous position that we were in, but not enough to beat a quality team like Hornsby
A bit of comfort food inside the warmth of the Lake Park clubhouse was what was needed. Add some of Doctor Kwan’s steamed dumplings into the mix, and the fielding team were ready to go.
Manly’s opening pair of Gus McConnell (2-18) and Toby Laughton (0-9) started off solidly in holding the Hornsby opening batsmen to 1 run per over. In the 7th over Gus struck to take the first wicket and Hornsby were 1 for 8. Josh Lawson and Roop Dhillon kept the runs in check. Roop bowled 10 overs straight for the figures of 1-14 in a outstanding display of tight leg spin bowling.
Despite the best efforts of the bowling team, the Hornsby side were continuing to track to the required run rate. The departure of the number three batsman brought the renowned Hornsby heavy hitter to the crease who promptly set about sending the Hornsby worm northwards.
Josh Lawson was brought back into the attack in the 23rd over and struck in the 25th. A wonderful piece of fielding by Jeremy Scarf resulted in a run-out and soon Hornsby were 4-43. Surely this couldn’t be happening, but the big hitter was still there and finding the boundary easily. In the 30th over he found the middle of the bat off Arjun’s bowling and the ball sailed towards the lagoon. It probably would have landed in the water if it wasn’t for Manly’s Jeremy Scarf who reached high to take the catch inside the boundary. Things were getting exciting.
Another wicket to Gus without another run added and the crowd was coming alive. Andrew Boulton chimed in with another wicket and It was left to Josh Lawson (4-10) to cement a stunning victory to Manly. Consistent line and length bowling saw him take 4 wicket for three runs in his last three overs and Manly were home.
All that was left was for Jeremy Scarf to be carried off the field on top of Toby Laughton’s shoulders. If only someone had got that on camera.
