MANLY U15 MARGARET PEDEN SHIELD | Round 1 Match Report
Date of Event : Wed Oct 17, 2018 5:23AM

Manly 1/76 off 18.4 overs (J. Mulcahy 25no, H. Woolf 25, R. Medley 17no) defeated Hornsby-Kuringgai 8/75 (S. James 2/8, J. Wilson 2/9) off 40 overs

After a week of constant rain, our round one match was moved from Grahams Reserve to David Thomas Fields at Manly Vale. At the 7am pitch inspection there were puddles all around the ground and rain still falling but with knowledge that the ground drained well we were still optimistic to wait around as long as it takes.

The rain then eased and the puddles drained away and with a little bit of work to dry the pitch we surprisingly started on time with Manly winning the toss and electing to bowl.

Manly started well with a sharp bit of fielding by Gemma Lacey to run out their opener in the first over. Hornsby-Kuringgai re-grouped however to put on a patient 35 run partnership with very little scoring opportunities coming from tight bowling by our openers Amelia Sim (0/5) and Gemma Lacey (0/6) and followed by Jess Manning (0/9) and Jasmin Wilson (2/9).

A couple of maidens by Abby Melville (0/8) and Chelsea McLerie (1/6) then resulted in the break through with Chelsea picking up the second wicket with a sharp catch in the covers by Jess Mulcahy. Our next bowling change continued where the others left off with Breanna Henry (0/6) bowling good lines and Sienna James’ (2/8) ripping in some off-spinners until Sienna bowled the Hornsby-Kuringgai middle order batter attempting to lift the run rate.

Sienna then removed the opening bat, spinning a delivery through her defences to hit the leg stump. Robyn Medley (0/4), Jess Mulcahy (0/5) and Mia Nel (1/1) continued to apply the pressure with very tight bowling resulting in a good catch to Amelia Sim off Mia’s bowling.

Runs were now very hard to come by for the Hornsby-Kuringgai batters and when Jasmin Wilson was reintroduced into the attack, she picked up 2 quick wickets. One bowled and a second catch to Jess Mulcahy. The 8th wicket came soon after, with good throw by Chelsea McLerie to achieve a second run out and the Hornsby-Kuringgai innings closed with 8/75 from their 40 overs.

Patience and discipline were required to see us home and Hornsby-Kuringgai bowlers were up for the challenge. A couple of play and misses early by our openers Jess Mulcahy and Hannah Woolf showed some good positive intent but they then reigned it in slightly to be a bit more selective in their shots and put on a very solid 53 run opening partnership. They defended well but also dispatched the few bad balls they received. There were a couple of potential run out mix ups that had the supporters on the edge of their seats but they survived until Hannah was out caught for 25. Skipper Robyn Medley then came to the crease to continue the run chase.

Jess Mulcahy (25 n.o.) and Robyn Medley (17n.o) saw Manly home passing the Hornsby-Kuringgai total in the 19th over.

It was just great to be able to get a game of cricket after wet week and a good pre-season but to start off with such a really strong all-round performance was fantastic.

Jess Mulcahy received the player of the match for batting through the innings and good bowling together with 2 catches.

Go Manly!
