Girls Cricket

Girls Cricket – faster matches, more action, more fun

Local cricket clubs within MWJCA offer girls cricket teams and programs for girls from the ages of 6 to 15 (with some exceptions if older).  Introductory programs are targeted at 6, 7 & 8 year olds with competitions offered in u/11, u/13 and u/15. New formats mean faster matches, more action and more fun with friends.

MWJCA has significantly expanded its girls cricket program over the last couple of years. Many initiatives have been put in place to encourage participation at the junior club level as well as a pathway for additional cricket opportunities.  MWJCA recently won 2 national awards at the Cricket Australia a Sport for All awards – ‘The Association of the Year’ in part due to the growth in girls’ cricket and ‘Initiative of the Year’ - for our girls’ hub.

Cricket for girls begins in the MWJCA ‘blaster’ formats and continues through the age group competitions with the opportunity to move into the WMDCC senior female grade cricket club.

There are less players on the field = more action for players, shorter pitch lengths & boundaries = more action and supports improved skill development.  Everyone bats and bowls. More fun friends!

Your local clubs are - Beacon Hill CC, Collaroy Plateau CC, Cromer CC, Forest District CC, Harbord Devils CC, Peninsula CC, Seaforth CC, Wakehurst Redbacks CC – contact details are on the MWJCA website go to the ‘play cricket’ tab then ‘clubs’. MWJCA Junior Girls Representative Cricket

To represent MWJCA in representative cricket it is a requirement that girls play for a MWJCA club.  In representative cricket girls are also required to play in their correct age group.

MWJCA enters two teams into the Cricket NSW Youth Championships competitions (previously known as DCA) –

  • under 13 – synthetic wicket

  • under 15 – turf wicket

These 11-a-side matches are played on Sundays from October to early December against other associations.  The matches are longer formats (more overs) than the Saturday club competition. Squad selection trials for the next season are held at the end of the current season.

The MWJCA website is updated with additional information at that time.

Representative Carnivals

MWJCA encourages teams to enter carnivals we have regularly entered teams to girls carnivals in Canberra (Kookaburra Cup, October) and Orange (Western Districts, January).

When girls finish their junior girls’ cricket (15yrs +) they can trial for senior women’s cricket.

The Manly Warringah District Cricket Club (MWDCC) has also grown its women’s cricket program and now has teams in the Women’s Premier Grade competition.  The women’s grade competition is an open age competition for players 15 years and older, they are single selected teams. Teams are entered into

  • u/18 Brewer Shield (played Sundays on turf, 40 over matches), for those familiar with the boys u16 AW Green Shield the u18 Brewer competition carries the same level of prestige

  • 3rd grade (Saturday afternoons, 40 overs or double header T20s on synthetic wicket)

and new for season 2019/20

  • 2nd grade (Sunday 50 overs on turf or double header T20s).

  • u15 competition (Sundays 35 overs on turf).

MWJCA expectation is that girls looking at the u15 competition are playing in the local club cricket competition.

The Cricket NSW Academy is a State-wide program responsible for the identification and development of talented/elite female cricketers catering to players from the U/13 to U/18 age groups.  MWJCA has been very successful with the number of girls selected into the Metro academies. Selection are typically held after the end of the season for the following age groups - u13, u14, u15, u17 and u18.

CNSW considers the u15 Youth Championship competition as the primary competition for the u15 age group as it part of their robust player, coach and umpire pathway so for those considering the academy and playing in only one u15 representative team the youth championship competition is the recommended first choice.

As part of the Female Youth Pathway, State Challenges are held in the U/13, U/14 and U/17 age groups, performances in these tournaments can serve as selection trials for the NSW Metro teams for National Championships.
